In a significant move toward institutional adoption of cryptocurrencies, Citigroup has begun exploring stablecoin custody services and digital assets linked to cryptocurrency ETFs. Citigroup and stablecoin custody

According to the bank, the plan is to provide secure custody for underlying assets that back stablecoins such as U.S. Treasury bonds and cash in response to new regulations requiring stricter collateral standards for these currencies. At the same time, Citigroup is evaluating the development of stablecoin-based payment solutions, aiming to make settlement processes faster and more efficient. The institution already offers blockchain-based tokenized dollar payments for transactions between major cities worldwide and is looking to expand these services to the crypto ecosystem and cryptocurrency ETFs a rapidly growing market following the approval of spot bitcoin ETFs. Currently, Coinbase dominates the custody market for crypto ETFs, with over 80% market share.

This strategic approach by Citigroup could mark the beginning of a structural transformation: from regulatory skepticism to progressive, operational integration with the crypto world. It’s a clear sign that centralized finance is beginning to build bridges with decentralized finance, driving an evolution of the global financial system.
