Illinois Governor JB Pritzker signed into law today two bills aimed at protecting consumers who use cryptocurrencies, particularly those who interact with ATMs and digital kiosks. One of the measures requires operators of these access points to register with state regulators, while the other imposes an 18% cap on transaction fees and sets a $2,500 daily limit for new customers. Additionally, operators are now required to offer full refunds in cases of fraud. During the signing ceremony, Pritzker criticized the federal stance, stating: “While the Trump administration lets the ‘crypto bros’ write federal policy, Illinois is implementing sensible protections for investors and consumers.”
These laws position Illinois as a pioneer in the U.S. Midwest when it comes to crypto regulation, providing a protective framework for users in a context where digital asset adoption continues to grow rapidly.
